Did Somebody Step On A Duck?

Esquire has a nice, and free, “What I've Learned” from the late (and great) Rodney Dangerfield. He didn't have an easy life, and in the face of it his humor was remarkable. Among the gems is this account of how a legend was born:

I started over again with an image: “Nothing goes right.” Then when The Godfather came out, all I heard was, “Show respect. With me, you show respect.” So I changed the image to “I don't get no respect.” I tried it out in Greenwich Village. I remember the first joke I told: “Even as a kid, I'd play hide and seek and the other kids wouldn't even look for me.” The people laughed. After the show, they started saying to me, “Me, too—I don't get no respect.” I figured, let's try it again.

Playmakers

Hello from Minneapolis. Stumbled across this blog tonight, which dares to ask:

After the Ant Farm, what's the greatest living toy ever produced?

A beautiful blog about classic toys … and everything about sea-monkeys you've ever wanted to know.

Another Party In August

I have to tell you: Watching the DNC from a hotel room in Minneapolis while you have press credentials waiting for you in Boston, frankly, sucks.

But so is the way of the world, and today work should rightly come before play.

There is some good news, though (aside from being gainfully employed). First is that the Command Post’s Election 2004 page has been added by the Library of Congress to its MINERVA permanent online collection. Second is that we’ve received credentials to the RNC in New York this August, so we’re two-for-two in conventions, and we’ll be in the rare (I presume) blog-spot of playing compare-and-contrast between the two events.

So I have that going for me … which is nice.

Iranian Proliferation

Today in the Times Nick Kristof notes that Iran continues to push for nuclear weapon capability, and that our response is likely to get increaslingly tough with the regime. He also writes:

A tougher approach toward Iran isn't partisan, and a President Kerry might also pursue a more confrontational, albeit more multilateral, approach to Iran.

But that would be a mistake.

He goes on to note that doing so would only make the Mullahs stronger with their street, and that UN-backed sanctions also will not work. His solution:

We should vigorously pursue a “grand bargain” in which, among other elements, Iran maintains its freeze on uranium enrichment and we establish diplomatic relations and encourage business investment, tourism and education exchanges.

“What would destroy the conservatives [in Iran] would be a money flood” of American investment, says Hooshang Amirahmadi, the president of the American Iranian Council. “In just a few years, the conservatives would be finished.”

Ok. But are these two things—proliferation and connectedness—mutually exclusive? If anything, I would expect greater connection to the global political economy would increase the desire for nuclear capability as a marker of global legitimacy. So for me, the real question is: do you rest easier knowing the world has a liberal and open Iran that also has nuclear weapons (along with Pakistan and India, just across the way)?

Kasparov On Moral Equivalence

You may not think of Garry Kasparov as a political observer, but in fact, he is, as evidenced by his Op-Ed in Tuesday’s Wall Street Journal. In it, he writes:

The Islamic public-relations offensive is focused on proving that the West is corrupt and offers no improvement on the despots in charge throughout the Islamic world. At the same time, Al Jazeera isn't examining Vladimir Putin's war against Muslims in Chechnya. All of Chechnya is one big Abu Ghraib, but the Islamic world pays scant attention to the horrible crimes there because Mr. Putin shares their distaste for liberal democracy. The war is not about defending Muslims; it is about Western civilization and America as its representative.

You have to admit, he does have an uncommon ability to think seven steps ahead. When not battling Deep Blue or writing for the Journal, Kasparov is Committee Chairman of Committee 2008: Free Choice, a Russian political organization devoted to the ouster of Putin in the 2008 election.

Firefox

Hello from frosty Minneapolis. You know I pass on a product recommendation from time-to-time, and I have one now: the free Mozilla Firefox internet browser, which I've been using for two weeks now. Smaller in installation size, softer on memory usage, faster, and easier to use than Internet Explorer, and entirely free. Learn more, and download Firefox, here.

Oh Ya, Sooper Ho-ney

Hello from Minneapolis. Winter here, but if you check out the Philly web cam in the left-hand column, you'll see it's even more Winter in back home.

Good thing we got Wife that snow blower.

Also, my other gig … that place … (sort of like “that woman”?) is the main reason I've been a bit absent here lately … Jeff Jarvis said we edit the world, and sometimes that's a big job (especially for a hobby).

But we also had the Mosley Braun exit at 12:20 PM last night, before CNN. So at least we've got that going for us. Which is nice.

Alive And Freezing

Bayonne didn't get me, and hello from Minneapolis, where it’s cold. Cold and windy. Gusty windy. Gusty, cold, windy, bitter, frigid cold.

They tell me that comparatively, it’s not that bad.

Saw this today … it seems my 15 minutes aren’t yet quite up.

Rummy Poetica

Visit The Poetry of D. H. Rumsfeld. My favorite:

Glass Box
You know, it's the old glass box at the—
At the gas station,
Where you're using those little things
Trying to pick up the prize,
And you can't find it.
It's—

And it's all these arms are going down in there,
And so you keep dropping it
And picking it up again and moving it,
But—

Some of you are probably too young to remember those—
Those glass boxes,
But—

But they used to have them
At all the gas stations
When I was a kid.

Brightening Winter

Hello from Minneapolis, where the nights are increasingly long and brisk (although oddly, not as cold tonight as it is back home in Philly). People here start early with Christmas … yards and storefronts are already strung with lights and holly, Christmas trees shine through warm bay windows, and green-and-red sweaters abound. It’s an adaptive response, I think … breaking in deep and harsh winter with as long a burst of holiday warmth as possible, because God knows, January will soon be here.

But how can you stay warm this winter? There’s no warmth quite like that which comes from within, and nothing stokes that fire quite like giving. So in the spirit of the season: Click any (or all) of the links below, give something back, stoke the fire within, and be warm.

Worth Reading

This morning I am again struck by what a wonderful news and events blog Betsy Newmark publishes. It's a great way to start the morning and grab items of interest that many of the more heavily-trafficked sites often miss. And she's an elementary school teacher as well, which is cool (when at her site visit the page she publishes for her students).

And it's all in the family with the Newmarks: Her husband publishes a blog here, and her 11th-grade daughter, Meredith, publishes a blog here, which is a great read. Indeed, you have to love 11th-graders who write things like this:

I'm just not getting why something that seems so obvious—that taking Saddam out of power makes things better than they were before—to most rational people is so not obvious to, say, the Democrats running for president. Or to Amnesty International. Or to Old Europe. I've said it before and I'll say it again: these people need corrective lenses for their hindsight. As my dad sometimes says, “Your world may look like mine, but it's actually very different.”

And when I was 16 I was … well, I wasn't writing that. (Now, I'm not really a mover-and-shaker in the blogosphere, though I play on on TV. That said, I liked Meredith’s blog so much I may just wield the Great Sword of Linkage … so Michele, link to her blog, will ya?)

Primer On Mitt Romney

Hello from Minneapolis. I'll only say it's not cold here (yet), and get straight to business.

If you don’t recognize the name Mitt Romney, remember you read it here first. The sitting MA Governor, Romney, a devout Mormon Republican, is soon to receive much national media attention as that state over-politicizes the same-sex marriage issue.

Who is he? Father was Governor of Michigan. Harvard B-School. Harvard Law. BYU undergrad (there’s one strike against him). Multimillionaire. Founded Bain Capital in 1984, which in 2002 was worth $13 billion. Nearly defeated Ted Kennedy for Senate in 1994. Personally against abortion, but pro-choice as Governor. Rescued the scandal-clad Salt Lake City Winter Olympics as savior chair of the Organizing Committee. Shortly thereafter won the Massachusetts Governorship.

Learn more about him via these clicks:

  • A long and informative profile in Salt Lake’s Deseret News (note: the DN is owned by the LDS church and tends to skew conservative-favorable … nothing wrong with that, but readers unfamiliar with the DN should know the context)

There’s even a Mitt Romney affiliate blog (titled, surprisingly, “Mitt Romney Rules” … what, a teen-oriented pol-fanzine?) here.

Why should you care? It was a very big deal when JFK, a Catholic, ran for the always-Protestant office of President. If a Mormon Republican is going run with success on the national stage (we’re not counting Orrin Hatch’s never-inflated 2002 Presidential bid), it will be Mitt Romney. And I'll tell you what … if he were to run, he'd be a damn strong horse in the race.

Guns And Butter

Hello from Minneapolis, where winter has arrived (snow on the ground and forecast lows in the teens). While we were sleeping for flying or eating or blogging, Congress approved $87 bil for Iraq and Afghanistan … here's the link to the NY Times story, with this lead:

The Senate today approved an $87.5 billion package for the military and reconstruction campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan, one day after an attack on an Army helicopter in Iraq left 16 American soldiers dead.

The voice vote took place late this afternoon, with only a few senators in the chamber. Although the voice vote allowed for passage without any negative votes being officially recorded, the approval took place over the conspicuously shouted “no” of Senator Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia, one of the few lawmakers in the chamber.

Note the casualty reference in the first paragraph. I like to illustrate contrasts in media coverage, so here's the lead from the Wall Street Journal):

Congress gave final approval to $87.5 billion for U.S. military operations and aid in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Senate handed a legislative victory to Bush by approving the bill on a voice vote.

… although the Journal then links to the AP file story, which leads:

Congress voted its final approval Monday for $87.5 billion for U.S. military operations and aid in Iraq and Afghanistan, a day after Americans in Iraq endured their worst casualties since March.

In an anticlimactic moment for which only a handful of senators appeared, the Senate approved the bill by voice and handed a legislative victory to President Bush, who had requested a similar package two months ago. The voice vote — in which Democratic Sen. Robert Byrd was the only one to shout “Nay” — let lawmakers sidestep the roll call that usually accompanies major legislation.

Draw your own conclusions about editorial license. Also on the Journal site is this graphical breakdown of the bill's allocations, which I post here for your greater edification.

boo

Happy Halloween, fair readers. Today's posting will be all-Hallows style, and nothing else (and if it looks like a straight news post, understand that the news scares the hell out of me, and probably should you).

So we'll start with this: A Pumpkin Proposal

12.jpg

Not a bad way to pop the question, eh? Click the extended entry to read the CNN backstory.

From CNN:

A line of carved pumpkins spells out “Marry Me Rose” on the lawn of Rosemarie DelRoio's home in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, October 21. DelRoio's boyfriend, John Pearce, used the pumpkins to propose to his sweetheart while they were both walking through a nearby cornfield maze. She accepted.

I Think I'll Go As Frosty

Over the past 11 years I’ve spent on the East coast I’ve often been asked about the Utah winters. “Not as brutal as some that we get in Philly,” I say, “although they were longer … it always seemed to snow on Halloween.”

Turns out I’m wrong … sometimes it snows the day before, as evidenced by this snap sent today by friend Tony:

It’s cold here in Minny, but not that cold.

Hey Lady, Nice Pumpkins

Michele writes:

If any one of you so much as looks at my pumpkins in a way other than admiration, I will pick your eyes out with a spork.

How did she know I was staring? But don't worry, Michele … I've never considered your pumpkins with anything other than admiration.

Get Ready For The Fire Hose

A night in the hotel room with nothing but some work, some email, and blogging to keep me entertained … I know I’ve been delinquent with the posts recently—tonight I make up for lost time. Get ready for a veritable fire hose of blogging goodness. (And yes: Minneapolis is cold already.)

We’ll start with this: Bandai Corp’s Primopuel, the latest craze to seize Japan. But here’s the catch: this small, plush, gnome-like toy is a craze among 30- and 40-something women, not young girls. And they’ve taken the craze disturbingly far, with the little soulless tikes serving as surrogate infants for tens of thousands of Japanese women. Hell, they even throw the things birthday parties. Want to be really frightened? Check out this French Primopuel site.

Another testament to rampant loneliness, I fear. (Nothing new, of course … just ask Thoreau.)

Hello from Minneapolis, where the colors are coming into full regalia. Dashing off to a meeting, but wanted to post something that might add to your day … so I picked this, which was first published in the New Yorker in 1999. Should be of great interest to anyone who wonders why some people seem to have all the influence. And if you happen to know Lois Weisberg, say so in the comments.

Smashing Earth

Hello from Minneapolis, where it is … oddly … quite warm. We expect a beautiful fall day here, in fact … check out the Minneapolis webcam (click the camera icon below this post) and see for yourself (it’s dark at the moment, of course … I mean, it’s 6:30 AM here, right?).

One of the bloggers I came to enjoy through creating The Command Post with Michele was Lt. Smash, who published a blog from the Iraqi theater. Now that he’s returned from duty, he's Citizen Smash and you may read his fine blog here.

Yesterday Smash posted about a small earthquake he felt in San Diego, which reminded me of this interactive online map produced by the United States Geological Survey (Smash later linked to the “Report It” section of the USGS site as well). The link I’ve posted is already narrowed to Smash’s part of the world, and sure enough, there’s his quake, the little teal square down Tijuana way. Play around with the map and visit the other USGS links there; it’s a great site.

The ability to look at maps of earthquakes in real time? I don’t know about you, but that’s PRECISELY the kind of Star Trek stuff that as a kid I always dreamed my computer would do …

UPDATE: For the even more curious, Smash's quake looked like this (from the same USGS site; click the image to see a larger version) …

Props To Willie

Hello from Minneapolis, and thanks to all who offered Wife and me congratulations on our anniversary. Among those noting congrats in the comments was Willie Galang, whom I recruited some time ago to offer the Philippines perspective for Command Post.

Along the way I've become familiar with his personal blog, Willie Galang: Where Did All My Free Time Go? which you can see here. Great content and a beautiful design … a blog which many, many more people should be reading regularly. Check it out and add it to your regular rotation.

Memorial

Good morning from Minneapolis. To remember this day, I ask that you visit two sites. First, to reflect upon the events of two years ago, visit Michele's Voices. It's an extraordinary site, and you should plan on spending some time there. Then, when you're ready to reflect upon how things used to be in lower Manhattan, go here.

Enjoy your day, but take the time to draw those you care about near and tell them you love them. Doing so is a rare gift. I was on an airplane that day, and I’m on the road again today, and each day since 9/11 I’ve reminded myself just how important it is to tell Wife I love her—and how fortunate I am just to be able to do so.

So Wife, in the event that you read this before we speak today, I love you.

This is my only post for the day. I'll leave you with my own memorial to the sacrifice of 11 September 2001.

Mars

Good morning from Minneapolis. The press on the close approach of Mars has been voluminous, but I did come across two items I thought were especially cool. The first is this page at Astronomy.com which offers the two of the best composite Hubble photos of Mars I’ve seen (when you get to the page, click the pictures to see them full-size). The second are these snaps that friend Matt forwarded, along with this email:

Here are some photos of Mars from last night. I shot them with my Fuji S2Pro, a Nikon 200mm 2.8 lens, and a TC-200 2x Tele Converter. The top 2 are short exposures, while the bottom 2 are 10 and 30 seconds respectively. It was interesting to see how fast that little orange ball was moving, or rather how quickly we (the earth) is rotating.

Enjoy the snaps; click to see them super sized.

Straight Sense

Some people have taken the whole Queer Eye For The Straight Guy thing absolutely the wrong way. This guy gets it absolutely right.

Now, a few gay critics have complained that the show dwells too much on homosexual stereotypes of neatness, cooking acumen, and knowledge of couture.

But Queer Eye actually alters sexual politics, says University of Washington psychologist Doug Haldeman (who is gay). “The show puts gay men in positions of power, helping straight men,” he said. “And gay men are allowed into bedrooms and bathrooms - the inner sanctums of straight men, where the gay men are very much in control.” …

… But just as important, Queer Eye lets narrow heteros confront their gay discomfort, and demonstrates how two disparate camps could get along, given the chance. It teaches fraternal acceptance, along with the occasional shaving tip.

Yep. Read it all.

Eminem's Website Sucks

Was just wrapping up this slick and scintilating post about my day in Minneapolis, the things I learned today, and my observations whilst blogging wirelessly from the Minneapolis Intnl. Airport Food Court (e.g., "younger and younger women are wearing thongs these days"), when, when posting a link to Eminem's website, my Explorer crashes, and I lose the whole thing.

Lesson: Regardless of design, from a technical perspective Eminem's website sucks. Don't go there. And here I was about to give my props to 8-Mile.

Off to Detroit, blog you from there.

The Fall Of The House Of Saud

This Atlantic Monthly article by Robert Baer was airplane reading for me last month, but wasn't available on their website. It's online now at FrontpageMagazine.com, and I strongly suggest you take the time to read it in full. Here's the lead ...

Americans have long considered Saudi Arabia the one constant in the Arab Middle East--a source of cheap oil, political stability, and lucrative business relationships. But the country is run by an increasingly dysfunctional royal family that has been funding militant Islamic movements abroad in an attempt to protect itself from them at home. A former CIA operative argues, in an article drawn from his new book, Sleeping With the Devil, that today's Saudi Arabia can't last much longer--and the social and economic fallout of its demise could be calamitous.

We have to run an effective army struggle against everybody. Now this message would be sent for every Israeli. Your children and your women, your husbands, everybody is a target now.

"Yes, Mrs. Clinton, I'm gay and I'm British, but I am NOT Andrew Sullivan, so kindly remove that knife from my back."

Thanks to LB for this fine blog-related contribution ... visit his blog, Adventures in Bureaucracy.

Note: I also favored Wife's entry, "I just can't wait to be Queen!", but felt there was a conflict of interest.

Hello from Minneapolis. Just wondering: has anyone noticed this? How about this? And what about this? Of course, Iran is straddled by the two newest US military staging areas ...
