In his analyst call today Bill Gates stated that 5 percent of all Windows-based computers now crash more than twice each day.
I guess I’m in the unlucky 5% (as is everyone else in my office). How about an informal poll. If your PC crashes more than twice a day, say so in the comments. If you enjoy greater stability (with a PC, mind you … you Mac and Linux users hold your keys), say so in the comments.
Let’s see how this really plays out among the seven of us, shall we?

The kids are running Windows 98 on their computer. Hello, Crash City!
Posted by: Michele at July 26, 2003 08:24 AMMy laptop, with XP, I had to reset all the time prior to the HD crash and full re-install. The desktop is pretty stable. I should have a seperate poll about Microsoft APPLICATIONS ... my impression is that Office, for example, is even less stable.
I'll also note that Wife's Mac crashes ... uhhh ... never.
Posted by: Alan at July 26, 2003 09:13 AMLike Michele, since I got XP I'm in O/S stability heaven. I've owned this computer for just over a year, and I'll bet it's crashed maybe 3 times. However, prior to that I was in Windows 98 hell and then descended about 29384 levels to Windows ME torture...I learned cool stuff like "reformat the hard drive" and "disk recovery program".
Posted by: Jane Finch at July 26, 2003 09:52 AMxp -- no problem. Do you know that if you send Bill Gates a note about your MS software problems he'll send you $5,000? bwah hah hah hah!
Posted by: john at July 26, 2003 10:46 AMI have 3 boxes running Windows XP Pro... One of them used to crash about once a week with a video driver error - but it turned out it was a hardware issue. I replaced the card with a new one that uses the same drivers and it hasn't crashed since - that was in Febuary. The other two, I can't remember the last time either of them crashed.
My 98 machine at home runs weeks sometimes w/o crashing then its "blue screens of death" twice or three times daily for no apparent reason for similar time periods. I do abuse it with huge video files on a PII 400mhtz machine that its really not designed to handle though.
Work machine is Windoze 2000 Pro and its pretty stable. My Office suite is no problem either.
